Afghanistan to back Pakistan if wars with US: Karzai

The remarks were in sharp contrast to recent tension between the two neighbours over cross-border raids, and Afghan accusations that Pakistan was involved in killing the chief Afghan peace envoy, former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, by a suicide bomber on September 20.

"God forbid, if ever there is a war between Pakistan and America, Afghanistan will side with Pakistan," he said.

"If Pakistan is attacked and if the people of Pakistan needs Afghanistan s help, Afghanistan will be there with you."

Such a situation is extremely unlikely, however. Despite months of tension and tough talk between Washington and Islamabad, the two allies appear to be working to ease tension.

Karzai said tensions between the United States and Pakistan did not have any impact in his country s attitude toward Pakistan.

Bridge collapse kills at least 13 in India

Media reports said that at least 25 persons were killed and over 60 were injured when the bridge over Little Rangeet collapsed, about 30 km from Darjeeling.

Since the bridge had weakened contours, it could not bear the enormous crowd weight and hence, it collapsed.

"Every year, during Dussehra and Diwali (Hindu festivals), we organise cultural programmes. So today, we had it at Bijanbari and it was overcrowded. The bridge is the connecting route between Darjeeling and Bijanbari. We think the recent earthquake had also an impact on the bridge causing cracks in it. Vehicles are plying on the road, but we think this could be mainly because of the earthquake," said Binay Pamang, Assistant General Secretary, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha

The bridge had already formed cracks after the earthquake which struck the region on September 18.

Police sources said the darkness is hampering rescue operations and efforts are on to set up floodlight arrangements.

"As of now, 17 have been declared dead at the Darjeeling Hospital. We have also received information from the spot that another 8 bodies have been found. So, it s 25 now. Darjeeling hospital has about 80 to 90 injured people," Pamang added.

Reports suggested that a rescue team has been sent along with a medical team to handle the situation.

Subject to the appropriate follow-up treatments, the current status is quite satisfactory with an excellent prognosis," Dr. Fidel Ramirez said in a televised midday press conference.

"Doctor Salvador Navarrete does not have any of the scientific elements necessary to make pronouncements on the state of health of President Chavez much less the type of cancer he had or the prognosis of his health," said Ramirez.

Navarrete, in an open letter published by local media on Friday, said he has since fled the country, fearing for his safety after an interview published a week ago quoted him saying Chavez would be dead in two years.

Navarrete attended to Chavez a decade ago and claims he is in touch with some relatives and members of his medical team.

In his letter, Navarrete said the interview with Mexico s Milenio Semanal magazine was intended to combat official secrecy over Chavez s condition. He stood by his original prognosis of Chavez, which caused an uproar.

Chavez s health is the all-consuming issue for the South American OPEC member nation of 29 million people, one year ahead of a presidential election where he wants to be re-elected.

Chavez, 57, returned on Thursday from Cuba where he has received cancer treatments, declaring himself cancer-free in an event that included an open-top caravan to a regional Catholic shrine where he prayed and gave thanks for his recovery.

The three doctors on Saturday still would not disclose the type of cancer Chavez has, four months after surgery to remove a malignant tumor from his pelvis. This was followed by four cycles of chemotherapy treatment.

By common convention, oncologists say a person can be considered cured after two to five years of clean tests.

Sloppy fielding let Sri Lanka off hook: Misbah

Posted:

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq blamed sloppy fielding as the main reason for his team s failure to win the first Test against Sri Lanka here on Saturday, saying it was the only negative to take from the match.

Pakistan, led by 314 runs in the first innings, dropped seven catches in Sri Lanka s second knock with six going down on the fourth day to help their rivals salvage a draw.

Kumar Sangakkara, let off on 50 and 56, went on to make a match-saving 211 while Prasanna Jayawardene, given a life on 11, scored 120 to guide Sri Lanka to 483 in their second innings.

Pakistan called it a day on 21-1 after 10 overs of their second innings, having been set a daunting 170 from a maximum of 20 overs on the fifth day.

Misbah said that he and his team-mates needed to improve their fielding if they were to go on and win the three-Test series.

"The only negative from the Test is our fielding. Otherwise bowling and batting had so many positives," said Misbah, whose team amassed 511-declared in their first innings after bowling Sri Lanka out for just 197.

Left-arm paceman Junaid Khan recorded a career-best 5-38 in only his second Test, while opener Taufiq Umar hit a stubborn 236 to help Pakistan establish a big lead.

Misbah said Pakistan s fielding, always their weak point, has improved over the years.

"Pakistan s fielding has improved over time but we need to improve more, like in batting and bowling. We have been for ages on and off in the field, one day outstanding, other days not so.

Misbah praised his team s bowling. "We took 20 wickets and lost seven, so it s really a positive sign for our team. We can work hard on fielding, come with more confidence and do well in the second Test," he said.

The second Test starts in Dubai on Wednesday.

Misbah defended his team s tactics of not giving it a go in the run chase.

"Realistically, last day wicket...T20 is a different ballgame, you have field restrictions, a powerplay. In a five-day game, no restrictions, you can pack one side and nine an over becomes difficult, it was not realistic," said Misbah.
