Worlds population reaches 7 billion: UN report

Posted:

The United Nations will warn this week that the world s population could more than double to 15billion by the end of this century, putting a catastrophic strain on the planet s resources unless urgent action is taken to curb growth rates.

That figure is likely to shock many experts as it is far higher than many current estimates. A previous UN estimate had expected the world to have more than 10billion people by 2100; there are nearly 7 billion.

The new figure is contained in a landmark study by the United Nations Population Fund to be published worldwide this week.

The report, The State of World Population 2011, is being compiled to mark the expected moment this month when someone will take the world population over the seven billion mark.

Some experts reacted with shock to the figure. Roger Martin, chairman of Population Matters, which campaigns on population control, said that the Earth was entering a dangerous new phase.

Our planet is approaching a perfect storm of population growth, climate change and peak oil, he said. The planet is not actually sustaining seven billion people.

The Earth has now doubled in population since the 1960s, boosted by high birthrates in Africa, Asia and Latin America as the spread of medicine and better health care has seen the mortality rate for young children decline.

This has easily offset the general decline in the birthrate of advanced countries. It has also been boosted by an increase in lifespans of people across the world.

Some experts reacted with scepticism that the population would really hit the upper end of the predicted spectrum of growth and reach 15billion so quickly.

Professor Jack Goldstone of George Mason University, author of The New Population Bomb, said that he thought world leaders would act to ensure the Earth s population would start to plateau below that higher level.

The means and the desire to reduce the number of children people have is spreading around the world, he said. A level of 10-12billion by 2100 was more likely.

Bulawayo: Zimbabwe beat New Zealand in 3rd ODI

Malcolm Waller hit a single off the fifth ball of the last over to take Zimbabwe to a dramatic one-wicket win in the third and final one-day international against New Zealand at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday.

Waller finished on 99 not out off 74 balls as Zimbabwe chased down a New Zealand total of 328 for five which included centuries by Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson.

It was Zimbabwe s highest successful run chase and ended a sequence of seven successive defeats for the home side.
New Zealand captain Taylor (119) and Williamson (100 not out) shared a fifth wicket stand of 195 off only 133 balls.

It turned what seemed likely to be a respectable total into an imposing one, doubling the total by adding 164 runs in the final 15 overs, with the rampage starting in the batting powerplay taken after 35 overs.

But Zimbabwe got off to a brisk start with captain Brendan Taylor following centuries in the first two matches with 75 off 65 balls as he and Hamilton Masakadza (36) put on 100 for the second wicket.

Tatenda Taibu hit an aggressive 53 but it was a swashbuckling sixth wicket stand of 112 off 85 balls between Waller and Elton Chigumbura that put victory within reach for Zimbabwe.

Waller and Chigumbura got the target down to 34 off 36 balls when Chigumbura was bowled by Jacob Oram, trying a big shot.

In a nervy finish, three more wickets fell and with four needed off the last over, Waller was dropped twice by Ross Taylor at midwicket. Two runs were scored off the first miss and one off the second.

Then Ray Price skied a catch and was caught with the scores tied but the batsmen crossed and Waller had the strike and clinched the match.

While Taylor accelerated after a slow start in which he scored his first fifty off 83 balls before reaching his century off 115 deliveries, Williamson was in superb form from the start, hitting his century off 69 balls.

India wins 5th ODI against England

Posted:

A 129-run opening stand between Craig Kieswetter (63) and skipper Alastair Cook (60) gave England the perfect platform to chase down a 272-run victory target but Jadeja took four for 33 as the tourists collapsed to 176 all out in just 37 overs.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed three for 28 and part-timers Suresh Raina and Manoj Tiwary one wicket each for India, who failed to beat England in any form of the game on their recent tour.

India, put into bat, raced to 80 for nought. But they then slumped to 123 for four before captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni provided a late flourish with a sparkling unbeaten 75 off 69 balls to shepherd them to a commanding 271 for eight.

England looked very much in the run chase as long as Kieswetter and Cook were in the middle, the pair hitting boundaries at regular intervals.

Dhoni introduced spin in the eighth over but the breakthrough remained elusive until the 21st over when Varun Aaron bowled Cook to end his 61-ball knock.

Apart from the openers, only two England batsmen reached double figures against the Indian spinners who claimed nine of the 10 wickets.

Earlier, the left-right combination of Gautam Gambhir (38) and Ajinkya Rahane (42) gave India a solid start, adding 80 runs in 17 overs before Steven Finn triggered a top-order collapse with a double strike in the 18th over.

Finn induced Gambhir to drag his first ball of the over on to the stumps and pegged back scoreless Virat Kohli s off-stump with the last. His new ball colleague Tim Bresnan removed Rahane in the next over as India slumped to 80 for three.

Suresh Raina was badly dropped by Graeme Swann in the slips to deny Finn his third wicket and he went on to make 38.
Raina celebrated the reprieve with two fours in that over and steadied the innings with Manoj Tiwary (24) but India still needed a late push to reach the 250-mark.

Fortunately for them, Dhoni, who has not been dismissed in his last six one-day innings, responded with an immaculately paced knock.

The right-hander began cautiously before stepping on the gas, milking the bulk of the 39 runs off the last two overs to power India to a total that proved beyond England s reach.

The teams play a lone Twenty20 International at the same venue on Saturday.

Spot fixing case: Trial judge begins summary

Posted:

The judge presiding over the Pakistan cricket spot-fixing trial has instructed the jury at a London court on Tuesday to accept that teenage bowler Mohammad Amir and agent Mazhar Majeed were involved in fixing.

Former Pakistan test captain Salman Butt and fast bowler Mohammad Asif face charges of conspiracy to cheat, and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, following a Lord s test in August last year when they allegedly conspired with Majeed, Amir and other people unknown to bowl pre-planned no-balls. Butt and Asif deny the charges.

The comments came as the judge began his summary of the trial at Southwark Crown Court and were the first official guidance given to the jury on Amir and Majeed. However the judge added that their apparent guilt should not bias the fate of Butt and Asif.

"You can proceed on the basis that Majeed and Amir were involved in the spot-fixing at Lord s, as all parties agree that is the case," Justice Cooke told the jury. "But don t be concerned at their absence.

Earlier, Butt s lawyer Ali Bajwa completed his closing arguments, stressing that it was possible for no-balls to have been fixed without the knowledge of his client.

He suggested there was a criminal conspiracy between Majeed and Amir and possibly Asif, but insisted that Butt played no part in any spot-fixing that might have occurred.

In his closing, Asif s lawyer Alexander Milne urged the jury to "follow the money" after police failed to find any marked cash from an undercover reporter in his client s room during initial police raids.
