Iran accuses Israel, US of gearing up for military strike

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned against a military attack on Iran and again insisted Tehran’s atomic program was for peaceful purposes only.

“Iran’s capabilities are increasing and it is progressing, and for that reason it has been able to compete in the world. Now Israel and the West, particularly America, fear Iran’s capabilities and role,” Ahmadinejad said. “Therefore they are trying to gather international support for a military operation to stop (Iran’s) role. The arrogant should know that Iran will not allow them to take any action against it,” he said.

Ahmadinejad added Washington wanted to “save the Zionist entity, but it will not be able to do so.” “This entity (Israel) can be compared to a kidney transplanted in a body that rejected it,” he said. “Yes it will collapse and its end will be near.”
Ahmadinejad’s diatribe against Israel, Iran’s arch-foe, comes after Israeli President Shimon Peres warned on television Saturday that an attack on Iran was becoming “more and more likely.”

He followed this up in comments published Sunday by the Israel Hayom daily, saying: “The possibility of a military attack against Iran is now closer to being applied than the application of a diplomatic option.

“We must stay calm and resist pressure so that we can consider every alternative,” Peres said. In response, Russia warned against a military strike on Iran.

“It would be a very serious mistake fraught with unpredictable consequences,” said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “Military intervention only leads to a multiple rise in casualties and human suffering,” said Lavrov.

“There can be no military solution to the Iranian nuclear problem, just like there can be none for any other problem in the modern world.”

Michael Jackson doctor guilty of manslaughter

Posted:

Dr. Conrad Murray, 58, was led away in handcuffs after the Los Angeles jury reached a unanimous verdict. The doctor, who could face up to four years in prison, will be sentenced on November 29.

Dozens of fans outside the courtroom erupted in cheers and some burst into tears.

Murray had pleaded not guilty to giving the "Thriller" singer a fatal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol -- normally used in surgery -- that was ruled the main cause of the pop star s June 25, 2009 death. But prosecutors argued Murray was grossly negligent in administering the propofol to help Jackson sleep. Defense attorneys claimed Jackson delivered the fatal dose to himself.

The judge ordered Murray, who has been free on bail for two years, held in custody until his sentencing at the end of the month.

Murray did not testify at the Los Angeles trial and looked impassive as the guilty verdict was pronounced to a small cry from his side of the packed courtroom.

Jackson s mother Katherine and the singer s sister Rebbie cried silently as the guilty verdict was read. His siblings La Toya, Jermaine and Randy, and his father Joe, were also on hand.

Jackson was found lifeless at his Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009, age 50, about three weeks before he was scheduled to begin a series of concerts in London aimed at returning the pop star to the limelight after the humiliation of his 2005 trial and acquittal on child molestation.

Murray admitted giving Jackson a small dose of propofol to help him sleep. But his lawyers argued at the trial that the singer was dependent on the drug and that Jackson likely gave himself an extra, fatal dose of the powerful anesthetic, as well as swallowing a handful of sedatives, without Murray s knowledge.

Trial judge Michael Pastor said on Monday that Murray was "now a convicted felon who has been deemed the causative factor in Michael Jackson’s death". Pastor said he should be locked up before being sentenced to protect public safety.

On the street outside, more than 100 Jackson fans whooped with joy and chanted "Thank you judge" as the guilty verdict, announced live on television, was read.

Pakistan win SL series after 3rd Test drawn

Posted:

Pakistan clinched the three-Test series against Sri Lanka 1-0 after the third and final cricket match ended in a draw at Sharjah stadium here on Monday.

Persistent rain wiped out play in the pre-lunch session -- a two hours and 35 minutes delay -- which left Sri Lanka with little time to enforce a win despite declaring their second innings at 181-6, setting Pakistan a target of 255 in a possible of 61 overs.

By tea, Sri Lanka had taken three early wickets and were pressing for a win. Pakistan lost a further fourth wicket when opener Taufiq Umar fell for 39, before they finished at 87-4 when umpires called off the match four overs earlier due to bad light. Skipper Misbah-ul Haq (nine) and Asad Shafiq (seven) survived some anxious moments to salvage a draw.

Pakistan won the second Test in Dubai by nine wickets after the first in Abu Dhabi ended in a draw. The result kept Pakistan on the sixth ranking, as they needed a 2-0 victory to jump one place up and replace Sri Lanka on fifth.

Pakistan started positively before losing Mohammad Hafeez (13), Azhar Ali (seven) and Younis Khan (11) in the space of 37 runs. Hafeez had struck a boundary in the first over by Chanaka Welegedara but fell in an unwise manner, run out after taking a sharp single as he failed to beat a direct throw from mid-wicket by substitute Lahiru Thirimanne.

Ali, who scored a maiden hundred in the second Test, was trapped leg-before wicket by left-arm spinner Rangana Herath before Younis played an uppish drive off Welegedara and was caught at mid-on. Umar miscued a drive off spinner Suraj Randiv and was caught by Kumar Sangakkara at point, leaving Pakistan at 77-4.

Sri Lanka, who have now gone 13 Tests without a win since beating India at Galle in 2009, had hoped to score some quick runs in order to set Pakistan a target and then get their rivals out for a victory. But overnight rain and constant drizzle forced the umpires to keep the team away from the ground, part of which remained covered during the morning session.

When play finally resumed 35 minutes after lunch, Sri Lanka lost Kosala Kulasekara (seven) before declaring the innings at 181-6, after 2.2 overs of batting. Opener Tharanga Paranavitana remained not out 76, made off 168 balls with five boundaries and a six.

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal finished with 3-50 and paceman Umar Gul took 2-44.

The series highlighted Sri Lanka s batting frailties, especially in the first innings where they were bowled out for 197 and 239 in the first two Tests. If not for Kumar Sangakkara s 516 runs in six innings at 86.00, Sri Lanka would have been hard pressed to save the two matches.

Pakistan can take consolation from the fact that they have not lost a single series since the spot-fixing and corruption scandal of last year which ended in jail terms for their former Test captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer.

Both teams will now start a five-match one-day series with the first game in Dubai on November 11. They will also play a Twenty20 in Abu Dhabi on November 25.
