Russia Mars probe considered lost: report

Efforts to resume contact with a Russian space mission to Mars stuck in Earth orbit after launch have failed and the probe must be considered lost, Interfax news agency reported Saturday.

"All attempts to obtain telemetric information from the Phobos-Grunt probe and activate its command system have failed. The probe must be considered lost," Interfax quoted a source in the Russian space sector as saying.

The source said Russia s space agency would announce the failure of the mission in the next few days.

The space agency had said earlier scientists had a window of only a few days to reprogramme the probe in a bid to send it on its route to Mars. If this does not happen, Phobos-Grunt would fall back to Earth early next month.

The mission went awry after launch Wednesday when the five-billion-ruble ($165 million) probe s engine failed to fire, leaving it orbiting the Earth rather than starting its journey towards the red planet.

The probe had the unprecedented mission to land on the Martian moon Phobos and bring a sample of its rock back to Earth, as well as launch a Chinese Mars satellite.

The mishap caps an inglorious list for Russia s space programme in the 50th anniversary year of Yuri Gagarin s first flight into space.

Three navigation satellites plunged into the sea after a failed launch in December and Russia has since lost new military and telecommunications satellites upon launch.

The accident also comes just days before Russia is due to resume manned space flights to the International Space Station that ground to a halt in August with the crash of a cargo craft.

Obama sees economic power of Asia-Pacific region

Posted:

Placing high hopes on the economic power of Pacific rim nations, President Barack Obama on Saturday declared the Asia-Pacific region the heart of explosive growth for years to come. For businesses, he said, "this is where the action s going to be."

Obama was in Hawaii courting Asian powers as he sought to improve the beleaguered American jobs outlook. His move comes as his administration has poured attention and capital into deepening relations with Asia as a source of trade, jobs and security ties.

"There is no region in the world that we consider more vital than the Asia-Pacific region," he told chief executives gathered for a regional economic summit.

For the US, Obama s outreach also reflects worries about Europe s economic troubles and the need for the United States to tap the enormous base of potential consumers in the emerging nations of Asia.

Underscoring the region s importance to the US, Obama on Saturday, as expected, announced the broad outlines of an agreement to create a trans-Pacific trade zone encompassing the United States and eight other nations. He said details must still be worked out, but added: I m confident we can get this done."

On a day of heavy diplomacy, the president also was looking to contain deepening worries over Iran amid a fresh U.N. atomic agency report that Iran is working secretly on a nuclear weapon.

On the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific economic summit, Obama was to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. The timing of the meetings with the Russian and Chinese leaders was particularly significant as Obama seeks to increase world pressure on Iran.

Obama is the host of the APEC gathering, a non-binding forum that draws 21 nations from across a vast Asia-Pacific region. Obama chose to host the event in his home state of Hawaii to illustrate his ties and economic commitment to the Pacific region, although security threats may well dominate his private meetings.

"The United States is a Pacific power and we re here to stay," Obama said.

He called the trans-Pacific trade zone agreement a model for the Asia-Pacific region and for other trade pacts. Seated with the leaders of the eight other nations, Obama said the trade zone would increase US exports and help create jobs, a top priority.

He said the US is committed to shaping the future security and prosperity of what he called the "fastest growing region in the world."

The eight countries joining the US in the zone would be Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. A central topic for Obama and Noda will be Japan s interest in joining the trade bloc.

He broke the fifth-seeded Berdych s serve at the start of each set to take control.

"I really played great today. I didn t give Tomas much. I was able to play aggressive and serve good, so overall it was a wonderful performance," Federer said. "I just felt like I was reading his serve, I was playing well from the baseline."

Federer agreed that he was close to his best in making his first Paris Masters final.

"I take it as a compliment because the Roger Federer of old, he lost five matches a year and won 90 or 80," Federer said. "I think he did really well to hang in there, because I did have more chances than him."

The Swiss star, who won his home tournament in Basel last week, will try for his 69th title in his 99th final. He has now reached at least the final of all nine Masters events.

Tsonga won his only Masters title in Paris three years ago, and aims for his eighth career title. He almost threw away the semifinal against Isner when, serving at 40-15 up in the 12th game of the third set, he let Isner back in.

Tsonga saved three match points, with Isner helping him with unforced errors from the baseline.

Isner held serve for the entire match, but Tsonga dominated the tiebreakers to give the final a Frenchman for the fourth successive year.

Tsonga won the first tiebreaker 7-1, and the second 7-3, clinching victory on his first match point with a quick forehand pass that flew past Isner, who was hoping to become the first American to win here since Andre Agassi in 1999.

Tsonga and Federer are set to meet for the sixth time this year, and first since the U.S. Open quarterfinals when Federer prevailed.

Federer leads the matchups 5-3 overall, but two of Tsonga s wins were this year at Wimbledon and the Rogers Cup.

World champion Spain loses friendly 1-0 to England

Frank Lampard headed England to a 1-0 victory over Spain despite the world and European champions outplaying the hosts for most of Saturday s friendly at Wembley Stadium.

Captain on his 90th England appearance, Lampard netted four minutes into the second half, meeting the loose ball after Darren Bent s header came off the post.

"It was a difficult game, but we played well and maintained our style," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. "Although, maybe we lacked depth at times, we played well I thought."

It is the latest setback for Spain in a friendly against a leading side, with Del Bosque s side also losing to Argentina, Portugal and Italy since winning the 2010 World Cup.

Technically, the Spanish were superior and in complete control in London, but they squandered a series of chances to equalize after falling behind.

David Villa hit the post and Cesc Fabregas came close twice in the closing minutes.

Beating the European champions will boost morale in the England camp ahead of Euro 2012 after missing out on the 2008 tournament and then performing dismally at the World Cup.

Indeed, England struggled to retain the ball, with Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas having a quiet 45 minutes on the pitch as he matched his country s appearance record.

Like goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta from 1985 to 1998, Casillas has featured 126 times for Spain and he is still only 30.

The first shot the captain had to face didn t come until the 32nd minute when Lampard struck tamely straight at Casillas.

With England packing the defense, it took Spain until the 36th to come close to Joe Hart s goal, with Sergio Busquets flicking over.

Among Spain s three changes at halftime, Casillas place was taken by Pepe Reina.
