PM hails EUs continued support for Pakistan

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani describing the European Union of 27 members as an important forum, appreciated its continued support for Pakistan&rsquo;s contributions in the war against terror. Generous assistance of more than 300 million Euros for the flood victims by the European Union was also instrumental for their early rehabilitation, he added.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Prime Minister was talking to Pakistan&rsquo;s Ambassador to European Union Jalil Abbas Jilani, who called on him on Saturday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The ambassador informed the Prime Minister that the provision of tariff concession on 75 items and subsequent provision of GSP Plus facility by the European Union will help revive Pakistan&rsquo;s economy, create jobs and ensure investment in the country.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Prime Minister directed the ambassador to interact with the civil society and the people of policy making level to apprise the sacrifices Pakistani people have rendered in the war against terror besides suffering huge losses to the economy.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said that it was a big success of the democratic government that the nation has taken the ownership of the war against terror and was firmly behind the government to defeat the enemy of religion, our country and our way of life.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Prime Minister directed the ambassador to let the people of European Union know that human rights situation in Pakistan was much better and there was no political prisoner in the country.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Prime Minister directed the ambassador to project the recently passed bill by the National Assembly which had made culpable offence for the use of inhuman practices against women.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The ambassador said that he would undertake his diplomatic responsibility in the light of instructions of the Prime Minister to project the soft image of the country.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The ambassador said that in the dawn of democracy, the European Union had upgraded its relations with Pakistan at summit level and Pakistan was one of the few countries which enjoyed this status. The EU also has significant weight in the IMF.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Anwar Mansoor elected SHC Bar president

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Senior advocate Akhtar Ali Mahmood supervised the elections of the Sindh High Court Bar Association. At least 1,153 lawyers exercised their right to vote out of a total 1,358 registered voters.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Anwar Mansoor Khan was elected SHC Bar president by securing 512 votes. Ashiq Ali Anwar got 546 votes and was elected vice-president. Shahab Sirki got 421 votes to become secretary while Majid Nauman Khan secured 548 votes to be elected as Treasurer.<br />&nbsp;</p>

Karachi: Groom among two killed in traffic accident

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to police, groom Javed Iqbal and Ishtiaq were crushed to death by a rashly driven vehicle near Banaras Bridge.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The deceased Javed got married three days ago and was going with his friend to finalise arrangements for his brother&rsquo;s marriage. His Walima was scheduled to be held today (Sunday).<br />&nbsp;</p>


CJ LHC issues new roster

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The new Chief Justice (CJ) of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed after assuming the charge issued the roster of judges for Principal Seat and other benches of LHC.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The new roster would be implemented from the week beginning on 21 November, according to which 11 divisional, 9 special and 22 Single Benches of Lahore High Court would perform the judiciary duties.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In the Bahawalpur Bench, two divisions and four single while in Multan Bench three division and seven single benches would be functional. Similarly at Rawalpindi Bench one division and 3 single benches would work.<br />&nbsp;</p>


17 dead in Syria and Arab deadline looms

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>At least 17 people were killed across Syria on Saturday, activists said, as an Arab League deadline for Damascus to stop its lethal crackdown on dissent was set to expire.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Among the dead were four intelligence agents killed by gunmen who raked their car with gunfire and two mutinous soldiers who died in clashes with regular troops as the military raided the central town of Shayzar after a heavy shelling, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The latest bloodletting came just hours before the 2200 GMT deadline from the Arab League as world pressure mounted on President Bashar al-Assad&nbsp;s regime to stop the violence which the UN says has killed more than 3,500 people since mid-March.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>With rebel troops inflicting mounting losses on the regular army, Turkey and the United States both raised the spectre of civil war and Russia called for restraint.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>British Foreign Secretary William Hague was to meet rebel leaders in London on Monday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>After talks with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Moscow, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said: &quot;It is indispensable to increase international pressure.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We have tabled a resolution at the United Nations. We hope it will find as wide support as possible.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Russia has staunchly resisted any attempt to internationalise the crisis, fearing it could clear the way for a Libya-style military intervention under a UN mandate.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In October, both Russia and China vetoed a Western-drafted UN Security Council resolution that would have threatened Assad&nbsp;s regime with &quot;targeted measures&quot; over its crackdown.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We are calling for restraint and caution. This is our position,&quot; Putin said a day after after his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, had likened the situation in Syria to a civil war.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu both warned that the risk of civil war was real, amid growing losses among regular troops at the hands of mutineers.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;I say there is a risk of transforming into civil war,&quot; Davutoglu told AFP, pointing to the upsurge in attacks by army defectors.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Clinton told NBC news: &quot;I think there could be a civil war with a very determined and well-armed and eventually well-financed opposition that is, if not directed by, certainly influenced by defectors from the army.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Arab League said it was examining a Syrian request to make changes to a proposal to send 500 observers to Damascus to help implement a peace deal agreed earlier this month.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Saleh says will hand Yemen to army if he quits

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Yemen&nbsp;s embattled President Ali Abdullah Saleh said on Saturday he would hand the country over to the military if he were to step down as demanded by the opposition.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We... are ready to make sacrifices for the country. But you will always be there, even if we step down,&quot; Saleh told loyalist troops, in statements carried by the official Saba news agency.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The news agency said Saleh made the remarks during an inspection of the Republican Guards, an elite army corps led by Saleh&nbsp;s son Ahmed.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Saleh, who has been in power in Sanaa since 1978, has come under mounting domestic and international pressure to step down in line with a Gulf-brokered peace blueprint.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Saleh has welcomed the plan but has yet to formally endorse it.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>His remarks came ahead of a UN Security Council meeting due on Monday to discuss Saleh&nbsp;s refusal to hand over power under the Gulf plan in return for immunity from prosecution.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The council unanimously passed Resolution 2014 on October 21 condemning attacks on demonstrators by Saleh&nbsp;s forces and strongly backing the Gulf Cooperation Council plan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Several hundred demonstrators have been killed in Yemen since anti-government protests broke out in late January.<br />&nbsp;</p>


US forces kill two Iraqi civilians after bomb attack

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>US forces shot dead two Iraqi civilians south of Baghdad on Saturday following a bomb attack on their convoy, Iraq security officials said, while the US military denied its soldiers opened fire.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>According to an Iraq interior ministry official a roadside bomb hit a US convoy in Yusifiyah on the road to Hilla. American forces opened fire randomly, killing two civilians and wounding five.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>A police lieutenant in Yusifiyah, 25 kilometres (15 miles) south of Baghdad, confirmed the incident but put the toll at two dead and three wounded, one of them seriously.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Both spoke on condition of anonymity.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>However, Colonel Barry Johnson, a spokesman for United States Forces in Iraq, said that US troops did not open fire, and that no injuries were reported.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We have an operational report of an incident in that general area resulting from an IED (roadside bomb) attack against a convoy, (but) no shots were fired in response to the attack against our forces and there are no reported injuries,&quot; Johnson said.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Occupy protests spread to US college campuses

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>As Occupy Wall Street protests spread to cities across the United States, they are also taking root at the nation&nbsp;s universities.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On Thursday, students were among the thousands who took part in rallies stretching from New York to California. They have staged walk-outs from classes, held teach-ins and set up tent cities on campus.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The students say they are working in solidarity with the larger protests, but also have their own set of concerns: The rising costs of tuition, seemingly insurmountable debt and weak job prospects.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Organizers say protests at more than 120 universities, from state colleges to elite private universities, have been held so far. The schools include Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Brown University professor Robert Self says the protests are distinct from student activism in recent years, which has tended to focus on specific issues.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Chemical plant blast kills 14 in China

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Fourteen workers were killed and five injured Saturday in an explosion at a chemical plant in east China, state media reported, citing local authorities.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The explosion occurred around 2pm at a melamine production facility in Xintai, in Shandong province, Xinhua news agency reported.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Workers were maintaining and repairing a condenser when the blast occurred, Xinhau said, citing a statement by the Xintai city government.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Four workers died immediately and a further 10 died in hospital. The five injured were in a stable condition and an investigation into the cause of the accident was under way, Xinhua said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>China has a notoriously poor workplace safety record blamed on widespread disregard for basic safety measures as companies chase profits.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In September, three people were killed in an explosion at a privately-owned chemical plant in east China&nbsp;s Jiangxi province.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Among other recent deadly industrial accidents, last week at least 34 miners were killed in a blast at coal mine in the southwestern province of Yunnan.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In October, 12 workers building an underground parking lot in northeast China were killed when a concrete ceiling collapsed on them. Days earlier another dozen workers died at a steel plant in the eastern city of Nanjing when molten iron spilled from a furnace.<br />&nbsp;</p>


ICC urges Libya to hand over Gaddafi's son

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Libya must hand over Seif al-Islam, the son of Moammar Gaddafi, to the International Criminal Court, an official said Saturday, while holding out the prospect of a trial in Tripoli.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>An ICC spokesman said chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo would travel to Libya next week for talks with the new regime, as world leaders called on the authorities in Tripoli to ensure that justice was done.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Seif was arrested in the south of Libya, a senior National Transitional Council official said Saturday, almost a month to the day since the capture and gruesome killing of his father Moamer Gaddafi.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Russia&nbsp;s special representative for Africa Mikhail Margelov articulated the concerns of the international community quite clearly.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We are happy that this time the new authorities in Libya did not resort to summary justice for Seif al-Islam, the son of the ousted leader Gaddafi,&quot; he said Saturday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Seif, who was considered Gaddafi&nbsp;s heir apparent, is wanted by the court for crimes against humanity, allegedly committed during the former regime&nbsp;s crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in February.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He, his father, and Gaddafi&nbsp;s security chief Adullah al-Senussi, were all accused of having orchestrated the deadly operations against the protesters to put down the revolt by &quot;any means necessary&quot;.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The security forces, acting on their orders, killed or wounded, hundreds of anti-regime demonstrators, arresting hundreds of others as they tried to quash the uprising, which began in mid-February.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We are coordinating with the Libyan ministry of justice to ensure that any solution in regards to Seif al-Islam&nbsp;s arrest is in accordance with the law,&quot; Moreno-Ocampo&nbsp;s spokeswoman Florence Olara said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>ICC spokesman Fadi Al-Abdallah said that the Libyan authorities were obliged to cooperate with the ICC and surrender him to the court as required by the UN resolution on Libya.<br />&nbsp;</p>

Golf: Mulroy leads Dunhill third round

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>South Africa&nbsp;s Garth Mulroy made five birdies in a row on his homeward nine on Saturday, giving him a third round lead in the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He carded an eight-under-par 64 to move into a two-stroke lead over Felipe Aguilar, the Chilean who signed for a 68 after his second-round 64.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He added that the best way to fix that would be to go out and get a birdie on his first hole on Sunday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Mulroy started his round fast with a pair of birdies on the first two holes, and picked up a third on the sixth hole.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>His impressive&nbsp; round was in stark contrast to the woes of halfway leader Jbe Kruger, who battled his way to a one-over-par 73 in a round which differed markedly from his opening 36 holes.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Kruger was in joint third position with Scotland&nbsp;s Peter Whiteford who carded a 64 to match Mulroy, South Africa&nbsp;s Hennie Otto, and Whiteford&nbsp;s countryman George Murray.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Bremner pulled his tee shot on the 18th way left, hit his approach into the water, and ended up making a good double bogey seven for a round of 69 and sole possession of seventh ahead of the&nbsp; final round.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The pursuit of Mulroy will be a tough one, as he is determined to end a year that has been inconsistent with a victory.<br />&nbsp;</p>
