Iran: President's press adviser sentenced

Ali Akbar Javanfekr has also been banned from journalism activities for three years. Javanfekr is just the latest of dozens of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad s political backers to be targeted by hard-line opponents. This appears to be part of an internal power struggle over influencing upcoming elections for parliament, slated for March, and for president in 2013.

Javanfekr wrote in an official publication that the practice of women wearing a head-to-toe black covering known as a chador was not originally an Iranian practice but was imported. This was considered offensive by hard-line Iranian clerics.

The court sentenced him to six months for publication of materials and pictures "contrary to Islamic norms" and another six months for writings against Islamic norms.

Javanfekr has 20 days to appeal the sentence. His lawyer, Abdollah Nakhaei, said the verdict is unfair and that he will definitely appeal it.

The verdict came hours after authorities banned the pro-reform Etemaad daily for two months for publishing the text of an interview Saturday with Javanfekr, in which he criticized conservative opponents of Ahmadinejad for the arrest of dozens of the president s allies over the past months.

Federer beats Tsonga in 3 sets at ATP finals

Roger Federer weathered a barrage of big hitting by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France to begin his title defense with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win Sunday in the opening match of the ATP World Tour Finals.

Federer came into the tournament on a 12-match winning streak following titles in Basel and Paris, where he beat Tsonga in straight sets in the final a week ago.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion looked set for another easy win when he took the first set in 21 minutes, but Tsonga found his feet and broke early in the second set before taking the match into a decider.

A closely fought third set ended when the pressure seemed to get to Tsonga. Trailing 5-4, he was broken at 15 and Federer chalked up his third straight win over Tsonga since back-to-back losses at Wimbledon and Montreal.

"Today I had flashes of that match," Federer said of his five-set loss to Tsonga in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. "I didn t have much of a chance for a while on his serve. Mulroy takes first European Tour title

South Africa s Garth Mulroy earned his first European Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Championship on Sunday, shooting a 4-under 68 to beat Scotland s George Murray by two shots.

Mulroy started the day with a two-shot lead but was joined atop the leaderboard twice during the final round at Leopard Creek, before birdies on the 15th and 16th secured the win. He finished with a 19-under total of 269.

Murray eagled the 15th as Mulroy bogeyed the 14th to put the home player under pressure coming in.

But he responded with two straight birdies, the second on the 16th coming through a 60-foot downhill putt. He closed with two pars.

Murray s second place was his career-best European Tour finish.

Chile s Felipe Aguilar, South African duo George Coetzee and Jaco van Zyl and Scotland s Peter Whiteford tied for third at 13 under.

The 33-year-old Mulroy bogeyed the second hole to let compatriot Jbe Kruger grab a share of the lead. Kruger s challenge eventually faded with a second straight 73, but the U.S.-based Mulroy then had to hold off Murray to claim his first win on the tour.

He birdied the sixth and eighth, then mixed four more birdies on the back nine with the bogey on 14.

"I just tried to play smart golf and hit it in the right spots," Mulroy said. "I had allowed my thoughts to get a little ahead of themselves earlier on, but I managed to concentrate on the job at hand."
